I am pleased to share the news that you can now access the latest about St. Paul’s via an app: Catholify. It is available for both Android and iPhone. And not only does it give you access to the Cathedral’s bulletins, upcoming events, and other notifications, but it also lets you find Mass and confession times near wherever you are at any time. Download the app today and select the Cathedral of St. Paul as your parish!
A kind and generous parishioner donated a large outdoor statue of St. Francis of Assisi for our courtyard. It now stands on its newly-constructed base near the grassy area between the office and the sunken CLC patio. Soon our wonderful landscape crew will enhance the plantings around it also. (more…)
My thanks to Paul Davis and his dedicated team for putting on a wonderful evening last night at the Florentine! And hearty thanks to all parishioners who came, enjoyed the great dinner, danced, bid on auction items, and shared fellowship together. We will publish the gala financial results soon in the bulletin – hopefully next week. Thank you!
As has been announced at Masses and in our bulletins for the past few weeks, we are looking forward to having our biannual gala on Friday, October 13, 2017 – which, incidentally, is the 100th anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady at Fatima. We pray, through her intercession, for a pleasant evening that will also be of benefit to our great parish!
This year’s gala is called “Grand Gala at the Florentine“. The Florentine Building is about a block away from the Cathedral and is a very beautiful and elegant space. It will be a wonderful evening with cocktail hour, dancing, and a delicious dinner served by Corretti Catering. Tickets are $100 and may be purchased at http://stpaulsgala.org, by calling Krista in the office at (205) 251-1279, or after Masses for the next two weeks. Please plan to come! (more…)
This weekend was the annual “Pledge Sunday” for the Diocese of Birmingham Catholic Charities Campaign. Our parish goal is $135,106 – only a slight increase over last year. (more…)
Each Wednesday evening at 6:30pm during the school year over 100 men and boys from our parish and the surrounding area come to the Cathedral to participate in Fraternus. They share a meal; play dodgeball; hear exhortations on living a virtuous, masculine, faithful life; have guided discussions with their peers; have the opportunity for the Sacrament of Confession; and pray Night Prayer (Compline) from the Church’s liturgy.
Fraternus is open to any Catholic boy or man, from 5th grade (age 11) up. Our parish chapter has a web page with more information. I am proud that Fraternus is part of St. Paul’s!
Long-time members of the Cathedral know that we have always had challenges with our PA system. I am told that the current system is the best to-date. Yet I also regularly receive feedback from those who experience difficulties hearing at points or throughout Holy Mass. These hearing problems often are related to position in the church (e.g. those seated in the back) or with certain mics (e.g. the cantor microphone, or the lavalier/lapel mics). These reports sometimes contradict: for example, recently I had reports of trouble after the early Mass, but after the later one I heard much the opposite – everyone said they could hear fine!
One question we can ask is: Was the sound always inconsistent throughout the 145-year history of St. Paul’s Parish?
The answer is: Not necessarily. (more…)
This new “News/Views” section of our parish site is a sort of blog on which I can provide updates on things that are happening around the parish. My goal is always to keep Mass announcements to a minimum. Yet more information is sometimes needed. That is one of the purposes for this page.
It is also a place where I can put out ideas that I have for our parish. Nothing can replace our getting to know each other in person and discussing ideas in that way. But I hope that this page will help in general with the sharing of information. As always, if you have any suggestions, please share them!
